2nd Annual Frontier Days Rodeo
This weekend at the Cumberland County Community Complex, there will be a two night rodeo. The cost is only $5 per night to get in and it will be a great time for everybody! I love going to events like this because there is always such a great turn out and I enjoy meeting new people. Many of the locals strive for events like this and when they happen, the attendance is usually record breaking. A few years ago, I attended my first rodeo at this facility and I have been hooked ever since. There are a lot of things to see and enjoy. I really like the rope competitions and the barrel races. Boy, how those horses can fly. Yeehaw! This is a great way to also raise money for a local fire department in the county. The District 4 Fire Department off of Genesis Road supplies the concession stand and these events help them raise money for their equipment. Not only will your family enjoy a great night of fun and excitement, but also supporting the District 4 Fire Department with great food and refreshments. The show starts at 7:00 p.m. and get ready for the ride of your life. Call Randy Brewer at 931-544-0780 for more information. I hope to see you there at the 2nd Annual Frontier Days Rodeo!
--------------------------------------------The Homesteads is a Historical Landmark When looking for houses for sale in Tennessee, look at the Cumberland County area. There are many local communities with different styles for different preferences. One of the more country areas of Cumberland County is Homestead. There are many residents of this area but the homes are more spread out, separated by gorgeous countryside and rolling hills of farmland. If you travel south of the Crossville area, you will find yourself in the middle of this gorgeous area. The Cumberland Homesteads Community, or Homestead for short, was originally purchased as one of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal Programs. Homestead was one of the largest projects purchased to help with the Great Depression. The New Deal included a piece of land, divided into 5 to 50 portions, with all of the proper equipment needed to start a successful place including animals and tools needed to grow and prosper. Thousands of people were without a job and had no money so they were given these places and were instructed how to make it work. Many miners, textile mill workers, and farmers came from surrounding areas and that is exactly what they did.
There are a total of fifteen different housing plans that were originally used, but only eleven were repeated. The original design came from Architect William Macy Stanton using wood and a new innovative type of rock, called Crab Orchard Stone. These homes had indoor plumbing and by 1937 had electricity provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority. It was not until 1984 that Homestead was declared a historical district. Today, there are a couple places to visit where you can see some of the historical memorabilia. The Homestead Tower Museum is a popular place for tourists to come and look around. This monumental structure was built in 1937 and was used to accommodate administrative offices of the Homesteads. Inside of this building is a water tank and a ton of stairs reaching to the top where a lookout is located. In the bottom floor, there are pictures, documents and other keep sakes that were saved to express the historical value of this community. Another place to visit is an actual Homestead home that has been preserved from the actual time period of the 1930s. This structure is called the Homestead House Museum, and here you can learn first hand how living was like back then and step right back into history the minute you walk in the door. A lot of the primary artifacts and furniture are still there and help to give the full effect of what it was like to be a Homesteader back then. There are annual strawberry festivals that take place every September and many residents of Cumberland County show up to take part. This is a great community event and everyone is always welcome to attend. Next time you visit Cumberland County, take a trip down memory lane and visit the historical Homestead area and witness the amazing things this place has to offer.
------------------------------------------------Crossville, Tennessee is Locally Thriving
Crossville, Tennessee is Locally Thriving One of the things I have noticed recently in this area, is the amount of locally owned businesses. I guess I have always seen them but I now realize how popular they are. It seems like everywhere you look, there are businesses that have been owned and operated for years by families of this community. I think that it is great that this growing town still supports these businesses. What is funny is to also think about the competition that these places put out. I visited a local baby store the other day and found out that they were a major threat to Wal*Mart. In fact, it was said that they have reduced the sales of Wal*Mart by around 15% in the baby depertment.(This information came from a Wal*Mart employee) That is a big amount for just a locally owned business. It is important to me to buy things that I know are more locally owned than spending money on something that came all the way from China. There are many businesses here that make everything in the stores. I know of 2 major craft stores. Everywhere you look, there is success and that is something that makes this town great. The diversity of these locally owned businesses are incredible. You can drive down the road and stop at a local tile store and furnish your bathroom and then go a little further and buy a brand new tailored suit from two completely different stores but locally owned and operated. Big businesses are great and they attract more people but local companies are great for stimulating communities in many ways. Visit Crossville, Tennessee to see the many local businesses and take time to appreciate these businesses in this hard economical time. ---------------------------------------------Welcome Home 278th Troops!!!Welcome Home 278th Troops! A few days ago, I found out a large group of soldiers serving in Iraq came home earlier than scheduled. I knew we had a regiment in this area but I was so shocked to hear of their early arrival. That is great new to hear! They departed in February 2010 and were not scheduled back until December. This gives a whole new meaning to Christmas in July, that's for sure! Back when 9/11 hit the country pretty hard, the 278 went into full swing and has sent around 20,000 soldiers oversees. This regiment is the largest Army National Guard's unit and has been for many years. I am so proud of our men and women that fight for us everyday. It blesses my heart to hear of how much they do for us. We live in such a great nation where we have the freedom that our troops fight so hard for.Thank you for your loyalty to this great nation! I appreciate your time and efforts to protect this nation and support my freedom! ------------------------------------------------------------------ UNIQUE LOG HOME FOR AN INCREDIBLE PRICE!!! You can walk to the side porch and fire-up the outside fireplace and have a nice hotdog/marshmallow roast or just gaze into the flames and take in the warmth. As you walk through the front door, you will appreciate the openness of the ceilings finished in pecky maple and with barn wood accents. The floor is beautifully done in a slate tile pattern with your own little "created" stream flowing from under the massive 22 ft. tall, 60 in. diameter tree .The stream has fossils placed through out that the owners have collected through the years. Large windows display the outstanding view and the native stone fireplace with an energy efficient Pacific Energy wood stove insert, beckons you to "sit for a while". Off of the loft, there is a nice balcony with plenty of windows to allow abundant light and take in the view. Downstairs off of the kitchen, there is the ½ bath for guests and the laundry room complete with a nice stacked washer and dryer and a centrally located "smart-wire" box for cable, phone, HDTV and other media/security items.
